William married his second wife Ann Elisabeth nee AITKEN when she was 17. At this event, 7 February 1877, as well as at the birth of their eldest child (Annie Mirren) in 1878, his age is clearly reported as 38.

However, on his tombstone, his age is given as 58 in 1892, which gives a birth year of 1834.

Note: by Wouter:

by Wouter:
Using the age reported on Annie Mirren's birth record the closest record for a William Pettigrew between 1878 (known to be alive at his daugters birth) and 1980 is record 60/61 for 1901. This date is however 1 or 2 years out as he should have been 60/61 in 1901.
Update May 2011. The original document has now been obtained and this death record is not our William Pettigrew.
Update June 2011. Have now located the tombstone of William who died in 1892 (aged 58) which is 6 years different from the age on Annie Mirren;s birth register entry.
